Stéphane Beel Architecten(en, nl)
As productive and versatile an architect as Stéphane Beel is, architectural criticism and reception of his work are never far behind. New works are followed immediately by new words. Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, in 1955, Beel is one of the most prominent figures on the blossoming European architecture scene. His work has featured in numerous international magazines, including in El Croquis. This book presents a selection of eighteen of his projects in unprecedented detail. Every work is lavishly illustrated and discussed in a critical essay. The book opens with an extensive conversation between Stéphane Beel and the editors, Mil De Kooning and Christophe Van Gerrewey, both of whom are affiliated with the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning at Ghent University. The interview is entitled 'An Intense Order', which at once reflects the structure and the concept of this book: without putting forward a single, all-embracing interpretative system, it systematically offers a variety of opportunities for capturing the spark that invariably lights up the work of Stéphane Beel Architects.
